Qualcomm CEO Foresees End of Smartphone Era as AI Wearables Close In
Qualcomm Inc., a leading semiconductor company, has sounded a note of change in the tech industry by suggesting that the era of smartphones might be coming to an end. According to Qualcomm’s CEO Cristiano Amon, major artificial intelligence (AI) companies such as OpenAI and Meta are secretly working on next-generation wearable devices powered by advanced AI agents.
Amon, speaking on the Titans and Disruptors of Industry podcast, revealed that these partnerships involve undisclosed hardware projects aimed at shifting computing from smartphones to wearables. He stated, “There are some secret form factors that I cannot tell you about,” while adding, “But I think we’re working with pretty much all of them.”
Amon envisions a future where devices such as glasses, earbuds, and pins continuously collect context from users, allowing AI agents to perform tasks automatically. He described this scenario as an “ecosystem of you.” For instance, he noted that if AI understands what we say, hear, or see, it can provide crucial context for automated actions like paying bills, rescheduling appointments, or comparing prices in real time.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has been developing a personal AI agent internally. This move underscores the broader trend within tech giants to integrate AI into their offerings and workflows. Additionally, Andrej Karpathy, former director of AI at Tesla, highlighted how AI agents have already taken over much of his coding work, illustrating the rapid transformation of software development and everyday tasks.
Amon further stated that 2025 marks a turning point for AI agents, with widespread adoption expected by 2027 or 2028. This timeline suggests a significant shift in how users interact with technology, potentially leading to more integrated and seamless experiences through wearable devices rather than traditional smartphones.
These developments could have substantial implications for the tech industry, affecting everything from product strategy and infrastructure to enterprise software and developer tools.
