Meta and Anthropic are in advanced talks to lease up to $10 billion worth of computing capacity, potentially opening a new chapter for Meta’s AI infrastructure as it seeks to monetize unused resources. The agreement, proposed by Anthropic in June, would see monthly payments from the company to Meta over a two-year period. Both parties have the option to terminate early, and details remain subject to finalization.
This potential deal represents a strategic shift for Meta, which has invested heavily in AI infrastructure for its own models without yet developing it as a service for external customers. CEO Mark Zuckerberg mentioned at Meta’s shareholder meeting in May that entering cloud computing was “definitely on the table,” indicating the company’s openness to diversifying its revenue streams.
Anthropic is also expanding its infrastructure footprint, having secured agreements with multiple providers including SpaceX and TeraWulf. This move comes as Anthropic prepares for a possible initial public offering (IPO) by October, underscoring the urgency of securing robust computing capacity ahead of its market debut.
For Meta, this potential lease could open new commercial avenues in the AI cloud market. With the company already investing heavily in chips, power, and data centers to support its own models, a lease with Anthropic would allow Meta to monetize unused capacity and potentially reduce costs by aligning more closely with specialist providers like CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV) and Nebius (NASDAQ: NBIS).
The talks also highlight the growing demand for AI infrastructure. Companies are increasingly approaching Meta about access to its models or spare computing power, underscoring the broader market opportunity.
Anthropic’s own infrastructure strategy reflects the competitive landscape in the AI space. The company recently signed a 20-year lease with TeraWulf and has also tapped into SpaceX’s Colossus 1 facility in Memphis, signaling a commitment to robust computational resources as Claude adoption and developer demand continue to grow.
