Billionaire investor David Tepper, founder of Appaloosa Management, has made significant bets in the artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure sector, adding to his positions in both CoreWeave and Meta Platforms during the second quarter.
Tepper, known for his knack for identifying undervalued assets, particularly in distressed situations, has made a noteworthy move by initiating a position in CoreWeave (CRWV-2.13%). Appaloosa acquired 1,078,248 shares of CoreWeave, a neocloud provider that specializes in high performance GPU capacity for AI workloads. CoreWeave’s unique position addresses the growing gap in the market where hyperscalers struggle to meet the surging demand for AI driven training and inference deployments. The company’s backlog grew by over 246% year over year to $104 billion, with additional commitments of $25 billion signed after the quarter ended. CoreWeave’s customer base includes leading AI labs, hyperscalers, and a growing roster of enterprises, with revenue doubling year over year.
However, the company’s substantial debt load, with total debt exceeding $50 billion, has raised concerns. Tepper’s move into this stock, given the debt burden, suggests a calculated risk that he believes can be managed. CoreWeave’s heavy reliance on debt to finance its aggressive data center build out has led to questions about potential refinancing needs in a higher interest rate environment, which could impact the company’s execution risks.
In a related move, Tepper also increased his stake in Meta Platforms (META+0.75%) by 55%, adding 238,500 shares. This comes as Meta is reportedly exploring the possibility of leasing its excess AI compute capacity to third parties, potentially positioning it as a competitor to neocloud operators like CoreWeave. While Meta’s strategy remains unconfirmed, the prospect of a well capitalized CoreWeave customer turning into a rival is intriguing.
Tepper’s dual positions in Meta and CoreWeave reflect a strategic hedge. Valuation analysis indicates that both companies are trading at compressed forward price to sales multiples, with Meta also trading at a discount to its recent levels on a forward earnings basis. This suggests that the market is already pricing in CoreWeave’s leverage risk and remains skeptical of Meta’s high capital outlays.
Tepper’s pairing of these positions offers exposure to a leading neocloud player in a specialized market alongside a technology giant diversifying beyond advertising. Whether this strategy proves profitable will depend on the companies’ execution and the persistence of compute scarcity.
Tepper’s track record of identifying undervalued opportunities supports his strategy, reflecting calculated opportunism rather than simple momentum chasing. Appaloosa’s positioning should benefit regardless of the competitive dynamics in the AI infrastructure space, as long as both companies continue to demonstrate robust growth.
