With the rise of artificial intelligence, recent engineering graduates in India may find it harder to secure technology jobs, as companies increasingly automate entry- evel coding and software testing roles, according to Rajesh Nambiar, president of the National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom).
In an interview with Nikkei Asia, Nambiar highlighted that the traditional business model is under threat, necessitating a rapid overhaul of computer science (CS) curricula to better equip students with the skills needed for the evolving tech landscape.
“India’s tech education needs to adapt quickly to the changing demands of the job market,” Nambiar emphasized. “New skills will be required to keep up with the pace of technological advancement, particularly in areas like AI and automation.”
Nasscom, the largest industry body for technology companies in India, is urging an immediate review and update of CS education to ensure graduates are prepared for the new realities of the tech sector. The organization is also advocating for a more collaborative approach between academia and industry to ensure that the education system remains aligned with the skills needed in the market.
“The threat to the traditional business model is real,” Nambiar said. “We need to ensure that our educational institutions are not only teaching theoretical concepts but also providing practical, hands on experience that prepares students for the jobs of the future.”
As AI continues to advance, the focus will be on developing skills that complement AI rather than replace it. This includes areas such as data analytics, machine learning, and software development, which are crucial for managing and integrating AI systems.
Nasscom’s call for action comes at a critical time, as the country grapples with a rapidly evolving tech landscape. The organization is working closely with government and educational institutions to implement changes that will benefit both students and the tech industry.
“Immediate action is needed to ensure that the next generation of tech professionals is well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead,” Nambiar concluded.
